Interesting things happen when you agree to say “yes”.
The Kilimanjaro Marathon is a HUGE event in Tanzania. Many people travel from other East Africans countries like Kenya andUganda, and many countries all over Europe.
My host Dad (Baba) has run in the marathon 4 times. I agreed to run the 5K since I haven’t been training or running in years, probably since starting residency 3.5y ago. My host Mama told me that I should do the half marathon. She explained that the 5k is for kids and dogs. She said that even she, who hasn’t trained and is not in the least athletic, was to participate in the 21k race along with her friends.
So, naturally I agreed…
I was amazed at how many people participated. We ran through small towns and villages. Kids lined the streets and cheered. Women sold bananas on the side of the road. There was a paucity of women that participated in the half and full marathon. But, there were people of all ages, and plenty of external excitement to keep you moving. If I stopped to walk, there was always a friendly smile and a hand to pull me forward while giving words of encouragement: “Pole pole”, or slowly slowly.
I was most impressed by the footwear. Some ran in old worn out sneakers, some had holes, many lacked a decent sole, some ran in dress shoes, Speedo water shoes, sandals, and some even ran without anything on their feet at all.

I had a decent pair of sneakers on my feet, and although I lacked a sports bra with adequate support, and running shorts, I walked, jogged, ran, prayed, and at times held hands with my host mom’s friend all the way to the finish line.
With about 10km left, I realized that almost ten years ago I had written on my bucket list to complete a marathon before the age of 30. With July fast approaching, I had pretty much given up on that aspiration. I don’t particularly like running long distances, and the practice has always been a mental game that leaves me feeling defeated.
But some how I succeed.
And I am sure many of you are in disbelief, just as I am today, but I have a picture and a medal to prove it!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
Love,
Mommy
5K is for kids and dogs? Way to take the wind out of my sails! Ha ha…congratulations! Sounds like a good time. I would like to try that some day but I don’t think my knee would be happy afterwards.
